    Learn to take better photographs

These FREE tutorials and exercises were originally designed for journalists of community newspapers in South Africa of whom it is expected to take their own photographs. The course was presented by a local technical university.

My name is Heléne Cilliers and I have been a professional photographer for a large part of my life. I have taught photography to several people, some whom went on to become professional photographers.

The tutorial on the following pages will be of value to anybody who is serious about sharpening up their photography skills.

At the end of each chapter you will find exercises that you can do. However, if you want me to evaluate your work and give my opinion or advice, you will have to register here for a small fee. Alternatively you can discuss the exercises amongst each other on the forum.

In this tutorial we will look at ways in which you can sharpen up your skills as well as the way in which you look at light, composition, an object, person or event.

It is important to have a good understanding of the basic technical aspects of your camera, so that you can concentrate on the photographs you want to take.

If you are serious about taking good photographs you will have to study your camera manual and familiarise yourself with the camera’s functions. In tense situations, like for instance during a riot, you should know your camera well enough not to have to think about the correct settings. In difficult light conditions, where you cannot rely on the automatic function, you should know how to use the aperture priority, shutter priority or manual settings.

Click on the top left links for tutorials.

Note: More subjects will be added from time to time. You may also request tutorials or advice on specific aspects of photography by sending e-mail. (helene@freetutorials.co.za).
